Lady Borrodale's Gift - House of Edgar Genesis of Tartan - Single Width Cloth
Following the fateful Battle of Culloden, Prince Charles Edward Stuart embarked on a perilous journey across the rugged terrain of the West Highlands, desperately trying to evade the government troops that relentlessly hunted him, each seeking the substantial prize that was placed on his head. From the 20th to the 26th of April in the year 1746, he found refuge at the secluded Borrowdale.
During this time, he stayed for six days in the welcoming home of Angus and Catriona MacDonald, who provided him with shelter amidst the chaos. Upon his departure, Lady Catriona MacDonald graciously gifted him a suit of clothes, carefully chosen to help disguise him as a local and thus increase his chances of safety. This suit, or at least a part of it, eventually fell into the possession of Robert Campbell on the Isle of Scalpay. Over time, the suit was divided up and transformed into a cherished Jacobite relic, carrying with it the weight of history and the memory of those tumultuous events.
Peter Macdonald, a well-respected tartan historian, carried out some meticulous work of reevaluating the original surviving tartan remnants details and deciphering the original colours of the tartan to ensure its authenticity.
