Antique 1860's Style Balmoral Castle Ghillies Goats Hair Sporran
Antique 1860's Style Balmoral Castle Estate Ghillies Goats Hair Sporran
The sporran is handcrafted in fine grey goats hair sporran with three white goats hair tassels. The cantle is a black leather sporran with a ox blood red pinked underslip. The back is in Ox blood leather and has a classic small back purse.
This sporran pattern is the same style that was worn by the ghillies and estate workers on the Balmoral Castle estate in the 1850-60’s. The inspiration was the watercolour of Archie Brown ( John Brown’s younger brother ) by Kenneth MacLeay - The Highlanders of Scotland . Other earlier photographs featuring Balmoral estate workers including William Kennedy and William Morgan can also be seen in the same style of sporran.

A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.
