The name Kennedy comes from the Gaelic word cinneidigh, which in ancient Ireland originally meant “ugly headed.” Crossing the Irish Sea to settle in an area of Dalriada now called Carrick in Ayrshire, they were probably led by Gilbert, whose son Duncan later became the 1st Earl of Carrick in the 12th century.
The family loyally supported the Bruces before and throughout the Wars of Scottish Independence and were handsomely rewarded for their steadfast allegiance. Around 1360, John Kennedy became the owner of extensive lands at Cassillis, and in 1457, his distinguished descendant, Gilbert, was elevated in status and created Lord Kennedy.
