Glen Affric - House of Edgar Genesis of Tartan - Double Width Cloth

Named after the picturesque Glen Affric in the Scottish Highlands, where it was originally discovered buried in the peat. After extensive research has proven that this remarkable piece of tartan dates back as far as the 16th century. This significant timeframe places the creation of the tartan during the reigns of James V, Mary Queen of Scots, or James VI, thereby highlighting its historical importance and richness. Notably, it predates the well-known clan tartans that were popularised in the early 19th century, further emphasizing its place in the storied history of Scottish textiles.

The fabric underwent rigorous and meticulous testing to accurately determine its age and composition. Notably, four distinct coloured dyes were detected: green, brown, red, and yellow. These vibrant pigments would have been skillfully created using natural resources readily available to highlanders during that historical period, such as various plants, roots, and berries found in their surrounding environment.

Peter Macdonald, a well-respected tartan historian, carried out some meticulous work of reevaluating the original surviving tartan remnants details and deciphering the original colours of the tartan to ensure its authenticity.
