Culloden Coat Tartan - House of Edgar Genesis of Tartan - Double Width Cloth MWS4506/TI
Based on a historic tartan coat that is thought to have survived the notorious 1746 Battle of Culloden, this piece has captured the fascination of many. An interpretation of that unique tartan was first published in 1893 by the notable D W Stewart. However, this particular colourway was thought to be incorrect, possibly in an effort to emulate the original cloth as if it were new.
In 2007, Peter Macdonald, a well-respected tartan historian, began the meticulous work of reevaluating the coat's details and deciphering the original colours of the tartan to ensure its authenticity.
The coat is now housed at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum.

The Tartan Genesis
The Tartan Genesis collection thoughtfully looks back through tartan’s rich and diverse history, culminating in a collection that is remarkably unique and distinctive. Consisting of six historically significant patterns, this exquisite collection celebrates the beauty and intricacies of tartans before the advent of the uniformity of Clan setts, highlighting their individual stories and heritage.
From Scotland’s oldest true tartan, with its rich historical significance, through its military applications and notable association with the Jacobite Rising of 1745, to the vibrant period of the Highland Revival where talented weavers skillfully put their mark on tartans, showcasing their continuation and enduring legacy. For the very first time in any carefully curated stocked tartan collection, the traditional herringbone selvedge has been thoughtfully brought back to life – taking inspiration from a renowned weaving technique that has been consistently admired across various historical patterns.
