Antique 1859 Style Sutherland Goats Hair Dress Sporran
This sporran is true classic pattern based on the 1859 grey goat hair sporran used by the Sutherland Rifle Volunteers. Featuring an antique cantle we have paired the cantle with a fine grey goat hair body, to give a true Victorian dress sporran look.
This style was made popular in the paintings of Kenneth MacLeay in his commission from Queen Victoria in the 1860’s monograph The Highlanders of Scotland.
The original uniforms for the Sutherland Volunteer Companies were paid for by the Duke of Sutherland at an original cost of £800 in 1859 and featured this pattern of goat hair sporran.
The full back pouch is in tooled Ox blood leather.

A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.
