Vintage Paisleys of Glasgow 1937 Highland Wear Catalogue
Always interesting to look back at old Highland wear catalogues and if they have the original price lists compare prices. This catalogue was from 1937 and produced by Paisleys of Glasgow Highland Wear outfitters.
In 1937 Paisleys of Glasgow was offering.
The Argyll tweed jacket with vest in three qualities of tweed £4 - £4 10s - or £5.
Or an 'Argyll' Costume for Gentlemen. Outfit including
Tweed jacket and vest, Heavy quality kilt, Tartan trews, animal or leather sporran, Balmoral cap, Kilt pin, tartan tie, Heather hose, Flashes ( wool ), Brogues ( lacing ) Tongues for Brogues.
Again in three qualities of tweed
£14 11s and 4p - £15 15s and 10p - £17 9s and 10p.
For an extra 14s you can have tartan under trews as well.
When we compare the average earnings in 1937 it gives us some idea of the costing compared to today.
In 1937 the average Glasgow weekly wage was £3 9 shillings, making the quoted ' 'Argyll' Costume for Gentlemen' a little over a months earnings. However, the Glasgow average was not the true average across Scotland. In 1937 the Scotland average wage was £2 a week and less for many. In agriculture the average wage was approximately 37 shillings a week.
Paisleys the outfitters was a fixture at the corner of Jamaica Street and the Broomielaw from around 1880 until 1979 when it closed its doors.
